It’s rare for Marvel to have a bad year, but this upcoming year is showing to be exceptionally exciting for all fans. They plan to release 4 new movies in 2018: Black Panther, Infinity War, Deadpool 2, and Ant-Man and the Wasp. With previous raging successes such as Spiderman: Homecoming, Thor: Ragnarok, Doctor Strange, and Captain America: Civil War, there is minimal worry about the quality of these upcoming movies.
The closest release currently is Black Panther, set to release on February 16, 2018. With presale tickets quickly surpassing expectations, some theaters have already sold out their premiere tickets. Many who don’t consider themselves fans of Marvel are looking forward to it’s release, as well, as many view it as an empowering movie for people of color. When he first appeared in Captain America: Civil War, many felt immediate excitement and started counting down to the release of his very own movie. Many Marvel Cinematic Universe fans are excitedly awaiting to get more reveal of Black Panther’s backstory in this likely blow-out movie.
Possibly one of the anticipated movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is Infinity War,
a movie that has been in the making since the release of Iron Man in in 2008. The connection of almost all of the Marvel movies released since then, and finally the answer to whether Thanos will destroy the universe or not, gets released on May 4, 2018. Any long-time Marvel fan will tell you their excitement to see the Avengers meet the Guardians of the Galaxy and characters like Doctor Strange meet together to fight the biggest bad that’s been alluded to for 10 years. Though some are worried about its release, fearing they won’t follow the storyline of the comics which would leave a significant plot hole for Thanos’s motivations throughout the movie, many have faith in the creativity of the Marvel writers. Even with the worries, it’s no doubt that the excitement only continues to grow as May 4 draw closer.
A niche character- and “raunchy” some would say- is Deadpool, who had his debut on screen back in 2016, and also has a new movie premiering this year. Deadpool 2 is set to release on May 18, 2018 and many people are excitedly awaiting is release. Known as an “edgy” character and a not-quite-hero, known to many fans as an anti-hero, he brings a dark humor to Marvel. Many are excited to have a break from the seriousness of Infinity War and go see a guilty-pleasure film.
One of the lesser talked about films on the rise for Marvel is Ant Man and the Wasp, the
second movie made from Ant-Man, a comical superhero played by Paul Rudd. Set to premiere July 6, 2018, Ant Man and the Wasp is set to be another comedy much like the first film. With Marvels recent success with comedies such as Thor: Ragnarok and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, hopes are set high for another success. Though reviews for the original film were quite mixed, it’s likely Marvel will try to step up to the plate and blow this movie out of the park.
Marvel fans are some of the most dedicated fans out there, buying tickets as soon as they can and going to any early premiere they can manage. It’s easy to see that they don’t mess around when it comes to the release of movies, because even some of the worst reviewed movies sell out theaters. Movies like Black Panther and Infinity War will without a doubt sell out as even casual viewers will want to be the first in line to see the phenomenal films. Though Ant Man and the Wasp may not make as much as the bigger films, and will likely receive lower reviews, there’s no doubt Marvel fans will be flocking to fill the theaters before spoilers get leaked.
Has Marvel reached its peak? There’s no way to know until the following years of films roll out. It is likely that many will consider Infinity War to be one of the best Marvel movies made, as long as it is made right. The excitement may cancel out how good the movie actually is as many will set their expectations too high. In spite of that, this is definitely and exciting year for Marvel Cinematic Universe fans. Some would even say that they’ll have a MARVEL-ous year!
