Election Recap: Trumping Hillary

—Jamie McEachin—

Donald J. Trump: President-Elect of the United States of America, billionaire real estate magnate, and former reality show star. After a long and hard campaign, filled with controversy after scandal after outrage, the next president of America is a self-described political outsider, who has won under the banner of the Republican party.

Trump has been both a laughingstock and a serious contender during this election, most of which was within the same timeframe. At first an offhand joke, Trump eventually forced himself to the top during the Republican primaries and into the slot of Republican presidential nominee, much to the dismay of the GOP, who have been subject to Trump’s anti-establishment platform time and time again.

Other instances of racist, sexist, or ignorant rhetoric cast Trump as the anti-Clinton in this election; indeed, it was often hard to determine his policy proposals from among his inflammatory comments. However, in his acceptance speech on November 9, 2016, Trump called for unity: “Now it is time for America to bind the wounds of division; have to get together [sic]. To all Republicans and Democrats and Independents across this nation, I say it is time for us to come together as one united people.”

Furthermore, Trump went on to say, “I pledge to every citizen of our land that I will be President for all of Americans, and this is so important to me. For those who have chosen not to support me in the past, of which there were a few people, I’m reaching out to you for your guidance and your help so that we can work together and unify our great country.”
